MacTCP is a product from Apple Computer, Inc. that allows Macintosh software use the TCP/IP protocols. MacTCP is one of three pieces of network software that Fetch can use to communicate with FTP servers; the others are OpenTransport and KSP (see the OpenTransport help topic). Fetch tries to use OpenTransport, then MacTCP, and then Dartmouth’s own KSP protocol and a special network gateway. A message in the About Fetch... dialog box indicates whether OpenTransport, MacTCP or KSP is currently being used.
MacTCP is included with System 7.5, and therefore is bundled with most new Macintoshes. MacTCP is also included with Adam Engst’s “The Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh” from Hayden Books (send e-mail to tisk@tidbits.com for information). The current version of MacTCP is 2.0.6, and a number of problems have been observed with earlier versions so it is important to get the latest version.
